Willie Mays' memorable over the shoulder 1954 World Series catch will always be remembered as one of baseball’s greatest moments; however, even that catch cannot be considered as spectacular in a SGC 5 holder. Like Mickey Mantle, the Mays 1951 Bowman is his “true” rookie card, the first issue ever produced of the incredible “Say Hey Kid”. What can we say about Willie Mays that isn’t already acknowledged. Willie is only one of 6 members of the legendary 600 home run club and, after hitting his 600th in 1969, was only the second player to accomplish the feat since Babe Ruth. He is considered by many experts to be the greatest five-tool player to ever grace the diamond, and is easily the greatest living ballplayer. It is these legacies that make Willie May’s 1951 Bowman rookie card so desirable. One look at Willie’s youthful batting pose turns back the clock to an era when baseball was simply viewed as men playing a kid’s game. A lithographic batting stance image of Mays reflects super clear registration, framed by clean borders that are centered towards the bottom left of the card. Square corners are only mildly touched, and the entire perimeter is sharp. The print registration on the back is super clear with no apparent defects or creases throughout the card. Overall, this is a very eye pleasing example of Mays first baseball card, and adding it to your collection may be your best possible catch.
