Presented here is a really large and imposing array of vintage Topps and Bowman baseball cards, loaded with Hall of Famers and stars that stretch from 1954 to the mid-1960’s. It’s an eclectic, old-style auction lot that begs for a good deal of examination; there are key rookies and important HOFers seeded throughout, sometimes in very broad condition range but often high-grade treasures. Starting chronologically, there are three (3) 1954 Topps cards – Nos. 54, 66 and 62 – in mostly Fair to Good, but things start to get more interesting with 1955 Topps. A flawed grouping (65) of 1955 Topps cards is headlined by a Fair condition No. 123 Sandy Koufax Rookie and a Poor condition No. 4 Kaline, but much of the rest of the array appears to have been the victim of a crude effort at side-to-side trimming. In all a total of 46 cards from the 65 total show “Evidence of Trim.” Here’s a breakdown of the unmolested cards (19): No. 24 Newhouser – Fair, 26 – Good, 62 – Poor, 70 – Very Good, 77 – Fair, 89 – Good, 94 – Very Good, 96 – Good, 98 – Good, 99 – Fair, 100 Irvin – Vg-Ex, 106 – Very Good, 119 – Good, 138 – VG m/c, 147 – Good and 150 – VG-Ex. A breakdown of the Evidence of Trim cards: No. 12, 14, q7, 21, 28 Banks, 33, 42, 62, 71, 72, 74, 79, 86, 90, 91, 92, 95, 101, 107, 108, 109, 112, 114, 115, 116, 121, 125 Boyer Rookie, 127, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 136, 139, 140, 141, 142, 144, 145, 146, 148, 156, 158 and 160. From 1955 Bowman there are (39) cards, mostly Very Good to Excellent with some above and below, and including two Hall of Famers: No. 23 Kaline – VG-Ex and 197 Kiner – VG. The rest: No. 35, 101, 104, 109, 111, 112, 114, 115, 117, 118, 123, 125, 127, 128, 133, 137, 141, 142, 146, 147, 150, 163, 164, 165, 177, 178, 183, 185, 187, 193, 195, 197, 201, 207, 209, 221, 222 and 302. There is a really nice grouping (25) of 1957 Topps, the company’s first issue in the now standard 2 ½-by-3 ½-inch size that is generally better than the cards are typically found in older collections, with good color, photo registration and gloss. The breakdown: Ex-Mt (10): Nos. 226, 235 o/c, 236 o/c, 258 o/c, 372 o/c, 375 o/c, 385 (2, both o/c), 399 o/c and 405; Excellent (7): Nos. 213 o/c, 254 m/c, 375 o/c, 382, 388, 391o/c and 395; Very Good to Excellent (5): Nos. 187, 217, 226 o/c, 263 o/c, and 386 o/c; Very Good: No. 252 Erskine; and Good (2): Nos. 366 and 400 Dodgers Sluggers. A mostly Very Good to Excellent array of 1959 Topps (85) with some above, includes a bit of duplication and cards of Maris, Hoyt Wilhelm, plus Ace Hurlers and Reds, Athletics and Cubs Team cards; there are five 1960 Topps cards including No. 445 Spahn (Ex) and 480 Berra (VG-Ex), and a very large grouping of 1961 Topps (182) is mostly Very Good to Excellent, with some above and below, with some duplication and six Hall of Famers – Lopez (2), Alston (2), Gordon and McCovey – plus key specials like No. 307 Mantle Homers and 405 Gehrig Benched, nearly two dozen Manager cards, five teams (two Yankees), five World Series cards and a League Leader. A total of (41) cards from 1962 Topps in the same prevailing Very Good to Excellent, (29) from 1963 Topps, also mostly Very Good to Excellent. A group of (29) cards from 1964 Topps is a bit rougher, closer to Poor to Fair; condition then improves dramatically with a total of (17) 1965 Topps cards mostly Ex-Mt to Nr-Mt and including No. 160 Clemente (Ex o/c) and 320 Gibson – Nr-Mt. There are some other miscellaneous cards, including a 1949 Bowman No. 57 (Fair), three 1958 Topps, a 1961 Fleer Baseball Greats Gehrig No. 31 (Ex), a 1959 Fleer Ted Williams No. 70 (VG), two 1965 Topps Embossed (Nos. 51 and 65, Ex), six Ex-Mt 1962 Topps Stamps – Spahn/Ford, Wynn/Mathews and Tiefenauer/Brandt, and three miscuts.
