This is an imposing group of cards from Fleer’s first two football card entries in the 1960’s, plus a nice array of cards from the quirky, oversized 1965 Topps Football issue. The Fleer groups include a number of key Hall of Famers and stars from both the fledgling American Football League and the older National Football League. The cards are markedly better than these difficult issues are typically found in older collections, essentially Ex-Mt to Near-Mint. Here’s the breakdown: 1960 Fleer (7) – Near-Mint – No. 67 o/c, 119, 128 McGuire Rookie; Ex-Mt – No. 18, 60 and 120; and Excellent – No. 20 Baugh; 1961 Fleer (21) – Near-Mint – No. 7, 25, 39 Donovan m/c, 43, 45, 62 o/c, 69, 75 Robustelli, 81, 91, 97, 103, 121 and 127 McElhenny; Ex-Mt – No. 37 Marchetti, 51 McDonald, 57, 59 Brodie Rookie, 87 and 93; and Excellent – No. 63 St. Clair. In Topps’ most adventurous design attempt in football, here are the dynamic 1965 cards that captivated youngsters and serious collectors in later generations with its blazing color backgrounds and stunning 2 ½-by-4 11/16 dimensions. In an issue that always proved to be particularly condition sensitive, this grouping stands out with most of the cards Excellent or better. The breakdown: Nr-Mt – No. 10 o/c; Ex-Mt (3) – No. 67, 68 and 111; Excellent (8) – No. 40 o/c, 65, 70 o/c, 74 o/c, 76 o/c, 96 o/c, 166 o/c and 173; VG-Ex (8) – No. 22, 16, 78, 97, 134 Cannon, 146, 153 and 167.
