Presented is another example of one of the cool peripheral baseball card issues from the giddy days of the late 1950s, a 1959 Home Run Derby Duke Snider that is one of the keys in the charming black-and-white, blank-backed baseball card issue. At 3 1/8th -by-5 ¼ inches, the cards feature the 20 players who took part in the campy slugging contest that was the forerunner of the high-dollar and even higher-glitz extravaganza that is held each year alongside the All-Star Game. In 1959, the made-for-television Home Run Derby was held at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, with relatively modest television production values ruling the day and nobody in the stands watching. The 20-card set was sponsored by and presumably distributed through AMC dealers across the country, with the genuine scarcity of the cards contributing to a significant hobby profile more than 65 years later. At least for The Duke, the Wrigley Field outpost was almost a home game, being only three miles from his homeport The Coliseum. Home cooking didn't help the aging Duke; he lost to eventual champion Aaron, managing just a single homer in the contest.
