Presented is a 1959 Home Run Derby Ernie Banks that is one of the key cards in the charming black-and-white, blank-backed baseball card issue. The Banks example is a nicely centered PSA 3 that seemingly presents a bit better for the two-time reigning NL Most Valuable Player from 1958-59. At 3 1/8th -by-5 ¼ inches, the cards feature the 20 players who took part in the campy slugging contest that was the forerunner of the high-dollar and even higher-glitz extravaganza that is held each year alongside the All-Star Game. In 1959, the made-for-television Home Run Derby was held at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, with relatively modest television production values ruling the day and nobody in the stands watching. The 20-card set was sponsored by and presumably distributed through AMC dealers across the country, with the genuine scarcity of the cards contributing to a significant hobby profile more than 65 years later. Banks made three appearances in the series, ending 1-2 but laying claim to one of the higher home run totals at 25.
