Here’s one that has to be seen to be believed: a benignly searched 1964 Topps Baseball Vending Box so pristine and crisp it will make you giggle, but with centering that might make you gasp a bit, even for vending. We say “benignly searched” on the basis that with only a bit of effort, the box will yield two complete runs from Nos. 447-587, with one full run already provided, a second missing perhaps a dozen or so and with a bit more exertion you could work on a third. That run of 140 cards includes the No. 541 Phil Niekro Rookie (one example), No. 460 Bob Gibson (3), No. 468 Gaylord Perry (2), No. 538 Minnie Minoso (3), No. 540 Luis Aparicio (4), No. 543 Bob Uecker (4), No. 547 Gil Hodges (3), No. 550 Ken Hubbs In Memoriam (2), No. 567 Jim Kaat (3) and No. 540 Bill Mazeroski (4). As noted above, the cards are uniformly breathtaking in their pristine nature, with blazing white borders and sharp images matched by vivid colors, including the spot orange on the back that jumps off the card. The counterpoint, of course, is centering, with perhaps 40 percent of the box having alignment that might prompt thoughts of an upgrade, though not all of those would be severe enough to dictate an off-center designation. Curiously, the Seventh Series boasts better overall centering than the Sixth Series, with the vast majority of the 40 percent mentioned above occurring in Series Six. At the same time, the cards with centering difficulties on the front often yielded miscuts on the back, with perhaps 35 percent or so of the total thusly described, again largely in the Series Six cards. With that disclaimer addressed, for those collectors without even a whisper of Symmetry OCD leanings the lot presents a unique opportunity to add hundreds of Near-Mint to Mint or even better cards to their inventory. The final element of the lot is a handsome vintage 500-count vending box, still quite presentable but perhaps technically Fair because of separation at one corner and some of the expected scuffing and wear that comes after six-plus decades.
