Here’s a cool artifact inspired by the award-winning 1984 feature film “The Natural,” the cinematic interpretation of Bernard Malamud’s epic 1952 eponymous novel. Presented are 40 examples of the movie prop “card” featuring Robert Redford as the protagonist Roy Hobbs, neatly aligned on a 26-by-20-inch blank-backed uncut sheet. The sheet is in simply stunning condition, easily Near-Mint-Plus, with the fictional Hobbs commandeering Redford’s steely gaze in his New York Knights uniform. Malamud’s iconic novel was reportedly inspired by the bizarre shooting of the Philadelphia Phillies promising young star Eddie Waitkus by a deranged fan outside his hotel room in 1949. With a good deal of artistic license, filmmaker Barry Levinson took Hobbs and his magic bat to a dramatic ending a good deal more upbeat than the novel, what with fireworks and exploding light tower set to a rousing musical score. The home games of the Knights were filmed at the Buffalo War Memorial Coliseum, a suitably gloomy and dilapidated mausoleum that nicely simulated the patina of 1930s Major League Baseball.
