Presented is an important football vending box from 1970, the Topps Football First Series that features most of the key Rookies from the issue, many of whom are still present here despite some gentle searching and removal of perhaps four dozen cards at some point. Headliners include the key O.J. Simpson Rookie (2), multiples of other Rookies like Barney (5), Bethea (5), Bubba Smith (3) and dozens of cards from the major stars of the era. These are blazing cards, with snow-white borders and superb gloss nicely complemented by vivid orange and purple spot color on the reverse. As is fairly typical with vending, some off-centers – and nearly a dozen miscuts – are present, with the former description touching perhaps 13-15 percent of the total, though not all of those would be severe enough to dictate a formal off-center designation. Even with the benign searching mentioned above, the remaining roster is impressive indeed, with almost five dozen Hall of Famers and more than a dozen key Rookies. In the listing that follows, cards shown are the player’s regular-issue version unless otherwise indicated. Here’s the breakdown: Barney Rookie (5), Bethea Rookie (5) – 3 are o/c, Biletnikoff (3), Dawson (3) – 2 are o/c, Griese (3) – 2 o/c and an m/c, Deacon Jones (4), Kelly (5), Lilly (3), Mackey (3), Nitschke (3) – o/c, Otto (3), Renfro (4), Robinson (2) – o/c, Simpson Rookie (2), Sayers (3), Starr, Smith Rookie (3) – o/c, Stenerud Rookie (3), Series One Checklist (4) – 2 are o/c and 2 are m/c, and Series Two Checklist (3).
