Here’s a spectacular example of one of the most popular 1980s hockey food issues, the 1984-85 Red Rooster Edmonton Oilers card set, found here in its most coveted format, the two 15-card unperforated sheets, plus the difficult second printing of the Coach Glen Sather card. Each 13 ½-by-11-inch sheet features color photographs of the legendary members of the reigning Stanley Cup Champions Edmonton club, including four cards (on one sheet) of Wayne Gretzky, who by then already had five Hart Trophies (MVP) under his belt, plus fellow Hall of Famer Mark Messier, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, and Glenn Anderson. The cards are 2 ¾-by-3 5/8 inches and were distributed by Red Rooster Food Stores with sponsorships from Old Dutch Foods and Post Cereals. During a four-year run in that historic decade, the sets were distributed by more than 600 of the Red Rooster convenience stores primarily in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The scarce second-printing example of Hall of Fame coach and general manager Glen Sather is also included as a single card, with the only discernible difference being a lighter blue background and lowered ink intensity both front and back. Both unperforated sheets present almost as Near-Mint, with only the barest of nudges to one corner and extremely minimal staining to the top and bottom edges of each sheet. The miniscule staining, visible only with careful scrutiny, makes an appearance on the cards of Messier and Kurri; all four different Gretzky cards are mercifully situated in the middle row and thus are seemingly without blemish. The Sather card on the unperforated sheet has the tiniest wrinkle on the left edge. The pristine sheets and second-printing Sather card represent a rare opportunity to add an important 1980s treasure to an advanced NHL collection.
