Here’s yet another high-grade example of the 1974 Topps Deckle Edge issue, the 2 7/8-by-5-inch black-and-white cards that were a test issue thought to be limited to the Northeast. The cards feature a blue spot-color facsimile autograph on the front and blue spot-color cursive writing detailing a famous moment, along with a newspaper-like printed entry, on the back. A unique die-cut border gives the edges a scalloped effect, which of course adds significantly to condition sensitivity. Mix in the dramatically limited distribution of a test issue and the ingredients are present for a monster artifact. While the offered example carries a PSA 4 designation, it looks suspiciously like the high-grade colleagues from the same issue in this auction; we invite careful scrutiny of the digital image provided.
