Presented are two complete sets of perhaps the most attractive baseball card issue from the closing years of the last millennium, the stunning 1989 Perez-Steele Celebration Set that featured 44 legendary Hall of Famers as depicted by the equally legendary Dick Perez. With the famed Perez-Steele two-decade collaboration with the Baseball Hall of Fame, the 3 ½-by-5 ½-inch postcard style classics depict Hall of Famers like Aaron, Banks, Bench, Berra, Campanella, Hunter, Kaline, Killebrew, Kiner, Mantle, Marichal, Mathews, Reese, Snider, Spahn, Stargell, Billy Williams and Ted Williams, among others. And among the others are great Black stars Cool Papa Bell, Ray Dandridge, Monte Irvin, Judy Johnson and Buck Leonard, continuing the long-standing tradition that Perez embraced in celebrating the contributions of Black stars so long denied. The creator of the iconic Baseball Hall of Fame Art Postcard Series revved up the elegance quotient a notch or two with the presentation and accoutrement, in this instance a spectacular hinged green slip-style box with the boxed set embedded alongside a 24-page booklet produced on an outlandishly heavy card stock. The 11-by-14-inch presentation case includes a stunning, pastoral baseball painting on the inside of the box, with all elements seemingly as-issued and pristine. As noted, the lot includes the entire Series in the elegant presentation box but also includes a second example of the 44-card set in the smaller, interior box that is embedded in the presentation slip-case style box. The Perez-Steele 1989 Celebration postcard set commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. The design of these cards was inspired by the 1887 W.S. Kimball and Company Champions ( N184 ) set, with Perez immaculate watercolor portraiture of the Inductees on the top two-thirds of the card front and a smaller “in action” rendition below them. The amazing Dick Perez, who produced literally thousands of works depicting major league players in general and his hometown Philadelphia Phillies in particular, reportedly considered the Celebration Series among his finest accomplishments in a fabled career that spans more than a half century.
