Here is a wonderful piece featuring a very well-known and regarded hobby staple, the delicate 1911 S&4 Silks that were promotional items for a variety of the legendary tobacco brands so familiar to collectors of the T204, T205, T209 and T212 cards from the era. Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson, John McGraw, Mordecai Brown, Frank Chance and Zach Wheat headline the group of five dozen Silks, sewn by hand in often a less-than-symmetrical fashion. The 1 7/8-by-3-inch Silks utilized portraiture from the fabled T205 baseball card series, with versions printed as White and Colored, with the Colored Silks slightly larger at 3 ½ inches, with both styles found here in this handmade quilt. With rows of 12 across and five deep, the quilt presents at approximately 19 ¼-by-14 inches, affixed to a heavy cardboard to overall 20-by-16 inches. The piece presents decently, even in the face of some major repairs and some tears and scuffing; all four edges are covered a bit by the black-linen background framing. Ultimately, it’s a spectacular artifact featuring a handmade creation utilizing one of the genuinely condition-sensitive and popular issues of the era.
