Here’s an extraordinary artifact commemorating one of the greatest American League clubs that did not win the pennant, the 1928 squad that boasted a lineup of eight Hall of Famers and provided a glimpse of what was to come. Included as a Supplement to the Philadelphia Record, the sepia-toned image has a blank back and measures 10-by-15 inches, offered here in Poor condition because of paper loss at some of the edges and a couple of tears yet still presents decently. All 25 players from the club are pictured, along with Mr. Mack, most notably seven Hall of Famers: Ty Cobb, Lefty Grove, Tris Speaker, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons and Eddie Collins. Cobb, Collins and Speaker were on their way out in 1928, but the remaining group would form the core of the 1929-31 dynasty. The Athletics were an elite American League club in the first 15 years of the 20th century, winning six pennants and three World Series titles in that span; they would add three more pennants and two more World Series crowns by 1931, then suffer the indignity of having their stars scattered to the winds in Depression Era sales by the cash-strapped Mack.
