Presented are eight original mostly pen-and-ink drawings from baseball artist T.S. O’Connell, artwork that was used to create a number of card sets that the company produced in the 1980s, including the Baseball Greats and Mini-Prints issues. Additionally, a majority of the entire group encompassing multiple auction lots were used to accompany editorial features in the pages of Sports Collectors Digest from 1987-2011 and in a handful of other hobby publications from 1987-92. The grouping is headlined by the likes of Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Billy Martin and Craig Nettles, with each one being the original artwork that is signed by the artist. These pieces are typically drawn on 8 ½-by-11-inch heavy board for the pen-and-ink drawings and on a similar-size, high-quality textured poster board for the pencil and lithographer’s crayon pieces, with outliers noted in the listing below. The winning bidder should be aware that owning the original artwork does not convey any rights of reproduction, which are retained by O’Connell & Son Ink. The breakdown (8): 1) Babe Ruth, pen-and-ink with watercolor on 6-by-8-inch board, created for the Baseball Greats Series but never issued, 1983; 2) Billy Martin, from Series Two of the Mini-Prints, 1985; 3) Phil Rizzuto, 1955 Topps pen-and-ink with watercolor from Series Three of the Mini-Prints, 1986; 4) Craig Nettles, 11-by-14 inches, watercolor wash on black textured paper, from Series Six of the Mini-Prints, 1989; 5) Lou Geheig, pen-and-ink on 11-by-14-inch textured stock, from Series Six of the Mini-Prints, 1989; 6) Joe DiMaggio, scratchboard on black enamel, from the pages of Sports Collectors Digest, circa 1999; 7) Yogi Berra, pencil and lithographers crayon on textured stock, from the pages of Sports Collectors Digest, circa 2003; and 8) Mickey Mantle, pen-and-ink and watercolor on 11-by-14-inch textured stock, from the cover of Sports Collectors Digest, circa 2007.
