If you ever had a hankering for time travel, this spectacular model kit of the USS Olympia should do the trick nicely, from the stunning box cover artwork to the interior with the parts completely untouched and still in original cellophane packaging. Widely considered the finest model kit of Admiral Dewey’s flagship from the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War, the model was part of Revell’s “Golden Age” from 1955-59, the coveted “S Series” kits thought to have boasted of intricate, elaborate detailing and finely etched parts, along with superior box artwork. With the box in Ex-Mt-Plus condition by way of a couple of minor scuffs and the parts seemingly as-issued blazers, the time capsule attraction is unassailable. The colorful box is 19 inches in length, 5 inches wide and 2 inches deep. At a time when model kits typically were issued in a monochromatic grey, kit specs note that parts are also featured in a rare format of white, tan and dark brown. Other highlights include highly detailed planked deck and deck fittings, rotating main turrets with elevating guns, moving rudder, davits that can be raised and lowered, railings, black cord for anchors, decals, flag sheet, detailed instructions and even a booklet entitled “The Story of Ships.” Pretty heady stuff for 1959, and this writer ought to know. As a nine-year-old in relatively good standing at the time, I would have loved this baby. Probably couldn't have pulled the trigger, what with my entire fortune directed toward 1959 Topps Baseball cards, but I am sure I would have noticed Admiral Dewey’s Rookie “card” in the upper-left corner of the box.
