Presented here card number 39, Hall of Famer Dick Allen, from the unique 1974 Topps Deckle Edge issue, the 2 7/8-by-5-inch black-and-white cards that were a test issue thought to be limited to the Northeast. While the offered example of the legendary slugger carries a PSA 5 designation, it looks suspiciously like the higher-grade colleagues from the same issue in this auction; we invite careful scrutiny of the digital image provided. The cards feature a blue spot-color facsimile autograph on the front and blue spot-color cursive writing detailing a famous moment, along with a newspaper-like printed entry, on the back. A unique die-cut border gives the edges a scalloped effect, which of course adds significantly to condition sensitivity. It is worthy of note that the card does indeed refer to the Hall of Famer as “Dick,” which he pointedly preferred over the “Rich” first name that had been a point of contention between Allen, his former ball club the Phillies and the media. Mercifully, “Dick” appears prominently on his long-overdue Hall of Fame plaque.
